Class Structure

I really enjoyed the whole one day of class a week thing. However, I wouldn't have had a problem with class on Thursday's when there was a paper due, just to get more help if it was needed. Having that class probably would have helped me with some last minute questions I didn't get answered from emails right before the paper was due. For future 1020 students, I feel that it all has to do with what they are comfortable with, if they feel they are ready to take a class that only meets once a week but still have work due on another day, go right ahead and take that kind of class. If not, take a class that meets the usual two days a week. Whatever you decide to do make sure you stay caught up with things.

April 22

I'm done with exmas at 10:00 on Tuesday, so anytime after that is okay with me.

Assesment #11

I’m going to use my analysis project. I feel that I did a good and bad job on grammatical structure and a good job on punctuation. I feel that I did a bad job on grammatical structure because there were transitions needed in between some of my paragraphs. For example “These three ads have a common theme, which is portraying the image of being young and beautiful while wearing each fragrance.” “Many advertisements promote and divulge images of the “American Dream” as money causing happiness.” (Transition needed between the two paragraphs. I’m not really good at transitions, so most of the time, I probably didn’t have one. I feel that my punctuation usage was done very accurately. I think it was punctuated the right way to make my paper flow.

Assesment #10

I’m not really sure what I’ve conquered this semester (not saying that I’m the best writer). I know there are things that I’ve improved at, but I’m just not sure what I have conquered. There are still some things I need to work on, such as transitions between paragraphs. I learned how to do things better with peer review, my book, and sometimes comments that people left on my blog. I feel that I may be a stronger writer than I was before, and I know how to appeal to different audiences with different genres.

Assesment #9

Formal citations work within an essay to show support for your reasons and opinions, and to show that you aren’t just making things up. They also work to show your audience that you are NOT plagiarizing. Formal citations help create arguments because you have proof that someone else agrees or disagrees with you and your opinion. It proves that there are people who feel the same way as you. It shows support because it gives evidence for your reasoning and your opinions.

Assesment #8

All of my papers used the same citation style which was MLA. I used the MLA citation format mainly because it’s the only one I’m familiar with. I also know that it’s an easy format to follow when looking for attributions for authors.

Assesment #7

Examples of credible sources would be professional accounting websites, accounting books, business magazines, and finance books. Some non credible sources would be wikipedia and other websites that anyone can post things on.

Assesment #6

Potential Careers in your major area of study: Accounting/Finance

A. To find out about careers in my major area of study digitally I could use the internet and go to different websites that offer career search engines such as monster.com and careercruising.com. Physically I could go to different offices that help you search for jobs such as Michigan Works, I could go to different offices that offer positions in my field, or career fairs.
B. I would use the internet, newspaper ads, business magazine, and other events that have promotions for my career. I could also use career books.
C. I would gather information from people I know that have careers in my field like my mom and older friends of mine that are going into the same field as me.
D. If the information is informative and helps me understand more about my career then it’s applicable.
E. Information I didn’t already know; or information that is not generally known.
F. I could use this information in a research paper, a power point presentation, or as a promote ad at a career fair.

Assesment #5

In order to write a love letter, I would first buy paper with some kind of border on it that looks passionate. Then I would buy a purple gel pen because it’s my favorite color and it’s also my boyfriend’s favorite color. I wouldn’t spend anytime thinking about what I want to write, I would just let the letter flow with my feelings for him. I would let him know all my feelings and thoughts of him and how much I love him. I would close the letter with a small poem about us, just to make him smile again. Finally, I would fold the letter and place it in an envelope, write his name on it, and draw hearts on it. I would leave it in a place where I know he would be sure to find it and smile when he sees it.

Assesment #4

I will be comparing the genres of the analysis paper and the ethnography paper. I feel these two genres are somewhat alike. In the ethnography paper you gave your definition of some specific topic. You do research, give examples, and include facts about your subculture. In the analysis paper you give your thorough interpretation about whatever you chose to analyze. For both genres you give your point of view about your topic, you have to take your audience into consideration, and you’re trying get a message across. One is more factual than the other, one allows you to do more research than the other, and one is more of your own idea than actual facts.

Assesment #3

I will again use my analysis paper, because I feel I followed this genre the best. I had a really hard time deciding what to use for this genre, I changed my topic from a book to three fragrance advertisements. I wasn’t much of a challenge to match the genre to the content once I changed my topic. I was having a really hard time trying to analyze the book, but once I switched to the ads, it was a lot easier. I reviewed these ads over and over until I felt I understood what the advertiser was portraying in his ad. I picked out what the message was sending to the audience and the overall appearance of the ad. There wasn’t anything I wasn’t allowed to include due to the genre. This genre made me realized that most advertisers sell appearance in their ads instead of the actual product, in many of the ads you can’t even tell what is being sold.

Assesment #2

I followed the analysis genre while writing this paper. It started off with a summary of what the advertisers were selling and the appearance of the ad to give the audience an idea about what they looked like. I then analyzed the three ads using examples as evidence. Finally I stated what I felt the advertisements meant, showing my opinion on how an advertiser sells things and how they appear to their audience.

Assesment #1

Class examples of genre are the argumentative essay, ethnography paper, and analysis paper. When it comes to genre, it all depends on what you are writing. Genres are identified through many different things such as tone, language, medium, and design. You construct your paper on the basis of your audience, based on who you’re writing for; you make it appeal to them. Your genre is produced according to the purpose of your paper.

Strong Bad

It’s a picture of a cartoon that I’ve never seen before; this cartoon character (known as Strong Bad), looks like he’s pissed off at the world. He has an irate look on his face, mouth wide open like he’s yelling at someone, and fist held out resembling a fight. Strong Bad’s sizzling face gives the impression he can take on anyone, no matter their size. It’s an appearance that would make you afraid just by looking at the picture. He holds his mouth open like he’s yelling at someone, like he’s mad about something and has to take his anger out by yelling. Strong Bad is wearing boxing gloves as if he’s ready for a fight, anyplace, anytime. His arms are held out like he’s implying you shouldn’t come near him unless you’re ready for a fight. Whatever it is, Strong Bad is simply shouting that he’s no one to be messed with!

The Monta Zone

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as bright as the sun and as healthy and glowing as a ginger snap. It is the offspring between a man and women, between husband and wife, and it lies between the family of four children, and the shortest of her siblings. This is the dimension of life. It is an area which we call...........THE MONTA ZONE.

Key Aspects

The key aspects would be how you view it and how others may view it. Depending on what your analysis is on, you may need to do reserch to prove that the information provided is acurate. The emphasis should be placed on the message of the the analyzed piece, not so much on the research. I'm not really sure what to do with the Idiot's Guide yet, so I have not comment on it.

Paper Proposal

I want to either analyze a poem or a movie. I'm not quite sure yet (I know I should be deciding soon). If I do a poem I would interpet the poem so you would be able to understand what it is saying, break it down so you get the message. If I do a moive I would focus on the message of the movie, what you're suppose to get out of it.

Analysis Skills Activity

Discuss the Readings

The first article explained the difference about writing papers in high school and college. This article broke down almost every aspect on how to write a good academic paper. The author of this article did a very good job addressing the audience. Being that the majority of the readers are freshman in college, the author addressed it to that group of people and did a really good job with it. The second article explained how to write scientific papers, by stating facts and not main ideas. I really couldn't focus with this one, so I don't really know what to say.

Class Structure

*I feel that this is helping me because it gives me more time to look into my assignments and allows me to work at a pace that I am comfortable with. I also like it because I like to type and not write, but I feel no matter what I would still be putting the same amount of effort into it.
*I feel the only way it's a benefit is if someone actually comments on the work. If you're doing all this work and no one's commenting on it, it really doesn't make a difference because you were going to have to do the work anyways.
*I would say that it's helping me more. I already had an understanding of it, it's just helping me to perfect it.
*I recommend this structure over regular class structure.

I don't know how to respond to this. Should I make up my own subculture, or did you give them a list to choose from?

Peer Review

I don't really know how to respond to this. But, from the responses I have read it seems to have gone really good.

Academic Integrity

Thesis: The pressure of success has made many students reach out to cheating, it wouldn't be such a big problem in higher learning institutions if the problem was pressed during earlier years.

Topic Sentence: In order to determine the proper punishment for those who cheat, you must first determine who is cheating and why they are cheating.

Topic Sentence: Some people would say that the reason most students cheat is because they see their peers doing, and how easy it is to do it.

Topic Sentence: Society has accepted that cheating is out there, but there should be punishments for those who do it.

Topic Sentence: There are many different ways a student can be punished for cheating, however the punishement should be the same for all cheaters, no matter how great or small the act is.

Conclusion: Cheating is something that eveyone cannot be responsible for, the individual who did it has to be responsible for his/her own acts. It has become so easy for students to cheat, that some see it as a norm; they don't take the time to see what their actions may be leading them to. However, when schools start to decide on a puishment for an individual who has cheated, it should be the same for everyone else. No punishment should be different for those who have made the same act.

Three Possible Topics

1. Shouold sex education be taught in schools?
-In my opinion, yes. Children go through a puberty phase and they need to know what's going on with their bodies.
2. Should the drinking age be changed?
-In my opinion, yes. Why is that I'm old enough to vote, but not old enough to drink?
3. Should same sex marriages be legalized?
-In my opinion, no. God created Adam and Eve for a reason, for man to be with woman. Not man with man and woman with woman.

"Fake News"

They all fit into the genre of "fake news" because of the way the productions are being presented. These programs are still presenting the news, they're just delivering them in a different way. It's still the news they're just doing it in a sarcastic, but funny kind of way. I feel that the "fake news" keeps the audience's attention, more than the regular news. But I question why it's called "fake news" when it's the same information given by the regular news? It's something that can keep the attention of young people and something that they can understand, rather than them being confused by the regular news.

Audience, Purpse, & Design

Audience, purpose and design plays a big role in the way I write today. My writings differ depending on who I'm writing to/for. My teachers always see the best of my writings, my friends see just what I'm trying to say. Design is imporatant in my writings because if I didn't have any structure, puncuation, or style; who would want to read it? Purpose is also important because it's the only way I can write. I can't write a paper without having a purpose, otherwise I'd get lost and so would my readers.
